Sunset on The Homosassa River

The Homosassa River is another of the spring-fed rivers within the Springs Coast Watershed. The headwater springs of the Homosassa River are home to both freshwater and saltwater fish. This phenomenon is possible because the mineral content in the spring water resembles minerals found in salt water. The similar mineral content and some fishes' ability to tolerate broad changes in salinity allows some species of saltwater fish to live in these freshwater habitats. The fish you'll find in the Homosassa River include bream, largemouth bass, gar, speckled trout, redfish, cobia, tarpon, jacks, mullet, sheepshead and snook.

When you think of Florida, many people automatically think of the great beaches that surround most of the Florida coast. Homosassa is located on the west coast about 80 miles north of Tampa Bay. It's one of the hidden treasures of Florida. Our coastline is the only natural coastline left in Florida that has not been stripped of it's natural beauty, and developed into beaches. Hence, it's name, The Nature Coast. This unspoiled coast provides the superior habitat to support the best fishing anywhere in the country. When cruising the Nature Coast, you'll see all of the wildlife that is indigenous to Florida. Great Herons, Egrets, Pelicans, Otters, and Dolphins to name a few! It is also the winter home to the rare, and federally protected Manatees that were almost hunted to extinction years ago. The area is also well known for it's great Scalloping! Testimonials

A huge thanks again to Captain Mike, and all the other Captains, that participated in the annual outing for the kids at Homosassa Elementary School! As usual, the kids had a fantastic time, and they all caught some fish, saw Dolphins, Manatees, and all the other great wildlife on the river. A fantastic educational experience for them! Thanks Cappy!
